NELSON'S FOUND OBJECT MUSEUM: ONE HUBCAP AND A WEE STORY

This hidden gem showcases the depth of creativity and nostalgia in our community.

If you ever thought a single hubcap couldn't be a museum exhibit, think again. Nestled between a couple of classic craft beer joints and a very confused dog park, Nelson’s only found object museum boasts one remarkable hubcap and the tales of its travels. Legend has it, this prized wheel cover once belonged to an unsuspecting Honda Accord, lost during a particularly raucous Saturday night on the boulevard.

Local resident and enthusiastic curator, Murray 'Screwy' Wiggins, claims the hubcap embodies the spirit of 1974 when vehicles were as iconic as they were dangerous — and people weren't afraid to express themselves during pit stops. “You could see the soul of a car in its hubcaps back then,” he says, holding up the glimmering exhibit like it’s a golden chalice.

Friends, we’re not just talking about any old hubcap. This beauty has seen better days, covered in remnants of road trip memories and the occasional octopus ink smudge, evidently from its brief stint beside the wharf. With entry by donation, punters can chat with Screwy, who has lovingly furnished the space with whimsical stories that make this one-wheeled wonder a local treasure.

Next time you’re strolling past the craft beer taproom or the awkwardly placed pop-up vegan taco stand on the main road, swing by this tribute to unconventional creativity. Who knows, you might leave with a newfound appreciation for hubcaps — or at the very least, a lovely yarn to share over a pint. After all, it’s always nice to know the local museum is just one wobbly hubcap away from greatness.

A hubcap museum? Seriously? I'd rather donate my old socks to art than pay to see that glorified frisbee. But, I suppose if it gets people chatting over a pint, good luck to 'em!

I can't believe this is a thing in Nelson. A hubcap? Really? I mean, I've got a bit of lint in my pocket I could exhibit! But hey, if it sparks joy for some folks, who am I to judge?

Now, I ain't the biggest fan of hubcaps, but I gotta admit it's kinda catchy. Just imagine all the stories it must have! Still, I think they could do better with their exhibits. Maybe add a few more bits and bobs from old cars?

If that hubcap is the highlight of Nelson, maybe we need to lower our standards just a tad. Still, I guess a night out at the craft beer joints and a laugh over a hubcap can’t be too bad.

Sharon Ngatai

I'm just a bit surprised that people want to stand around talking about a hubcap instead of enjoying the beautiful views. Maybe a 'found object' museum should include actual interesting things too, like the 'thing' I found in my garage last week!
