BISHOPDALE GRITTED AT DAWN AFTER RESIDENT REPORTS "BIT OF A NIP" IN THE AIR
Tuesday's low of 8.4 degrees prompted full winter response from Christchurch City Council.
A Bishopdale street has been treated with road grit after a single resident phoned the council on Tuesday morning to report it felt "a bit fresh out there".
The grit truck arrived on Greers Road shortly after 6am, scattering a fine layer across an intersection that had not, by any meteorological measure, frozen. The official overnight low was 8.4 degrees. The grass was, witnesses confirmed, merely damp.
The resident who made the call, Pauline Beazley, 71, was unrepentant. "I went out to get the paper in my dressing gown and I felt it in my knees. Gerald always said if you feel it in the knees, you grit the road. I'm not having anyone come a cropper on my watch."
A neighbour two doors down, Hamish Wetere, said he'd watched the truck go past and assumed something had gone properly wrong. "Thought maybe a tanker had tipped. Nope. Just Pauline."
A council spokesperson confirmed the application was "precautionary" and consistent with the city's cold-weather response framework, which they described as "responsive to community concerns". Asked whether one phone call constituted a community concern, the spokesperson said the matter was "under review".
The grit remains on Greers Road. Pauline has since phoned again to report a southerly is "on the way", citing her knees.

Bit ridiculous, isn't it? Back in my day, we'd just put on a thicker jersey and get on with it. You'd never see us wasting grit like that.

Honestly, at least she's looking out for everyone. Slipped once on ice and was off work for weeks. We could use a few more Paulines around.

Reminds me of the time Gerald decided to sandbag our street because he thought the river might rise. Sometimes your knees just know!

Grit at 8 degrees?! Next they'll be issuing snorkels at the first sign of rain. Come on, what a waste of resources!

Lol. Knees don't lie.
