Grey Lynn Water: A Dash of Chlorine, Anyone?

Sources allege Auckland Council has reversed the chlorine-to-water ratio. The Daily Yarn has spent six weeks investigating a glass of water.

A Daily Yarn investigation has uncovered serious concerns about the tap water being delivered to homes across Grey Lynn. Three sources allege the kitchen tap is now producing what one described as "chlorine, garnished lightly with water".

The allegations centre on a suspected reversal of the treatment ratio at an Auckland Council facility. Sources who spoke to The Daily Yarn on condition of anonymity say the change became noticeable in mid-October. Their morning coffee began "tasting like a public pool that had given up".

"I poured a glass on Tuesday and it bleached the inside of the cup," said Imogen Vasalakis, 38, a Surrey Crescent resident who agreed to be named only after her flatmate refused. "I'm not saying they're trying to kill us. I'm saying if they were, this is roughly how they'd do it."

"It's not water with chlorine in it anymore. It's chlorine, with a rumour of water." — Grey Lynn resident, speaking to The Daily Yarn

What we know: Residents across at least four streets have described the tap water as sharp. One source produced a kettle with white residue. Another produced a cat that no longer drinks from the bowl.

What we don't know: Whether the ratio has in fact been reversed. Whether anyone at Watercare is aware. Whether the cat is fine. What the council's own water quality report says, because the PDF won't load.

A Watercare spokesperson said the water was "within acceptable parameters" and declined to specify whose. Asked whether chlorine was being added to water or water to chlorine, the spokesperson said: "That's a philosophical question." Pressed further: "Look, it's wet. It comes out the tap. What more do you want."

The Daily Yarn has approached Auckland Council, Watercare, and the cat for comment.
