MARSHLANDS MAN WHEELS PAK'NSAVE TROLLEY BACK FROM SHIRLEY, DECLARES HIMSELF 'JUST DOING THE RIGHT THING'
Six kilometres on foot with a wonky wheel, and now he wants a plaque.
A Marshlands resident spent Tuesday afternoon pushing an abandoned Pak'nSave trolley from a Shirley front lawn back to the Northlands car park, a distance of roughly six kilometres. He has since told anyone who'll listen he was 'just doing the right thing.'
Kelvin Doughty, 58, found the trolley tipped into an agapanthus on Hills Road and decided, unprompted, it was his problem. 'Someone had to,' he told The Daily Yarn, leaning on the trolley. 'Wheel's buggered. Kept pulling into the gutter.'
Witnesses along Marshlands Road reported seeing Doughty fighting the nor'wester with a damp shirt. My late husband Gerald would have driven past and minded his own business, which is what a sensible person does on a Tuesday.
A Pak'nSave duty manager said the supermarket had 'not asked anyone to do that' and would 'prefer people didn't', citing insurance. The trolley, she added, was 'one of the old ones' and had probably been written off in 2019.
Doughty is now considering a second trip, having spotted another trolley near the Prestons roundabout. His wife has asked him not to.
The agapanthus is recovering.

I think it's great Kelvin did that. Back in my day, people would have done it without thinking twice. Now it's all about getting recognition.

@BarryBishopdale in our day, there was no need to return trolleys from kilometres away because people had the decency to return them straight away!
