BROMLEY FOG SO THICK PARENT WALKS PAST OWN CHILD AT SCHOOL GATE

Visibility on Wednesday morning was described as 'about a metre, tops' by a woman who had already given up.

A dense fog settled over Bromley from about 6am Wednesday, reducing visibility on Keighleys Road to the point that one parent walked directly past her own daughter at the school gate and only realised at the bakery.

Mother of three Rangi Whitiora, 39, said she'd assumed her daughter was already inside. "She was standing right there. I said gidday to what I thought was a bin. Turned out to be Mereana. She's eight. She's not thrilled."

A neighbour further down the street, Bruce Ellery, said he'd reversed his Hilux into his own letterbox for the second time this month. "Can't see the letterbox. Can't see the ute. Bloody stink, really. Insurance bloke's stopped taking my calls."

MetService confirmed the fog was "advection fog, standard for a flat eastern suburb in June", and would likely clear by lunchtime. A council spokesperson said the fog was "not a council asset" and declined to comment further.

By 11am the fog had lifted enough to reveal three road cones that nobody remembered putting out, and Mereana, who was still at the gate, waiting.

Can't see the ute? Get glasses, Bruce.

Sounds like classic Christchurch weather to me. That fog was so thick I couldn't see my own shoes when standing up! Reminds me of the time in the late '80s when the fog was so bad one bloke accidentally took a cat home thinking it was his hat. True story.

couchgremlin

Lol, Bromley.

The council really needs to put up more street lights. We've been ignored for too long. This wouldn't happen if there was proper visibility and safety measures. Typical!

ropeable_dave

Mate, that's not what they said about lights.

Julianne_P

Honestly, how do you confuse a bin with your child? Bromley parent skills at their finest. Next they'll mistake a lamppost for a giraffe!

wayne1987

At least the council can’t be blamed this time. They’re right, fog isn’t a council asset. Still, can we get some accountability for those cones?

Angry_Al

Why are we even paying rates if the council's just going to wash their hands of nature? Ridiculous!

tin_foil_hattie

Could have sworn that fog was thicker than usual because of some new weather patterns I've heard about. Maybe the MetService is just covering it up to avoid panic. Who really knows?
