Cantabrians chuckle at Papamoa influencer's marathon beauty shoot

The video is captioned "no fuss, just me". Her husband has asked to be credited.

Margaret reports

A Papamoa woman's video of what she calls an "effortless five-minute look" runs for 38 seconds. Shooting it took three hours, 41 takes, a sheet over a clothes horse, a step ladder, and her husband standing on the ladder pointing a torch at her head.

Kayla Brunton, 29, posted the clip to her 4,200 followers on Sunday night. The caption reads "no fuss, just me". Her mother, who lives in Mount Maunganui and "just wanted people to know", sent The Daily Yarn 11 minutes of footage from behind the camera. The ring light was not enough. The bedroom light was "too yellow". Husband Dougal, 33, went up the ladder at 1.15pm and came down at 4.20pm.

"She said five minutes," Dougal said. "I know what five minutes means in this house. Took a muesli bar up with me. Ate it about take 12. Arm went dead about take 30."

By take 19 the couple's dog, Mabel, had been put under a sheet on the floor because her fur was "bouncing the light wrong". Mabel stayed there for the remaining 22 takes. A neighbour who came round to borrow a hose described the dog as "coping, I suppose". Dougal missed the supermarket run, which he said was "probably for the best, you don't want to be in there after two anyway".

Dougal has since asked for a credit at the end of the video, either as "lighting" or "grip". Kayla has said no. "It's a no-fuss video. You can't put credits on a no-fuss video. That's the whole point." She added that the torch was hers anyway, and that Dougal had "held it a bit wrong the whole time".

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson confirmed a sheet over a clothes horse does not need a building consent, but said the council would "appreciate a heads-up next time" all the same.

The video has 212 likes. The clothes horse is still up. Mabel is still under the sheet, by choice now, according to Dougal.

Back in our day, we called this vanity different names entirely. Gerald used to say, "The youth today have too much time and exposure." He wouldn't be thrilled seeing this marathon session for a beauty video. Have standards changed that much, or am I just out of touch?

★ JoannePetone

Honestly, between juggling teens' schedules and chores, I wouldn't have the patience for a beauty shoot lasting hours. Fair enough to those who do, but I'd rather spend my energy elsewhere.

Mate, did you even read it? It's about Dougal missing the supermarket run!

★ Trev_Hornby

This video sums up influencing. They'll spend hours for 30 seconds of nothing.

Reid_Tauranga

Good on Dougal for being the team player here. He's more patient than most blokes I know.

Allan_NZ

Good on ya, Dougal!

★ BarryBishopdale

The council's more worried about a clothes horse than real issues.

Sara_Welly

Mabel's a trooper, but the bloody dog deserves more credit than the influencer!
