MT EDEN COUNCIL CONFIRMS ROAD CONES NOW OUTNUMBER RESIDENTS, CALLS IT 'PROGRESS'

Auckland Transport reckons the 2:1 ratio is 'within tolerance'. Tolerance for what, they wouldn't say.

There are now twice as many road cones as people in Mt Eden, and Auckland Council says it has no plans to do anything about it.

A stretch of Mt Eden Road has been coned off since June for what AT calls "stormwater renewals" and what the bloke on the digger calls "buggered if I know, mate". Three of the cones have been there so long they've grown moss.

Resident Priya Ratnayake, 41, said she'd counted 84 cones on her street alone. "There's six houses. Do the maths. My kid drew a face on one in March and we've been using it as a landmark for couriers."

It gets worse up the hill. Village business owner Hamish Corrigan said the cones had been rearranged four times in a fortnight without any work being done. "Monday they're in a line. Tuesday they're in a circle. Wednesday some muppet in hi-vis moves them six inches and pisses off in a ute."

An Auckland Transport spokesperson said the cone density was "within operational tolerance" and that residents should "appreciate the underlying infrastructure investment". Asked what the investment was, the spokesperson said they'd come back to us. They have not.

The job, according to the chippie on site, will be done Tuesday. He didn't say which one.
