PONSONBY PTA SPLIT DOWN MIDDLE OVER SAUSAGE SIZZLE ONION PLACEMENT

Two-hour meeting. No vote reached. The barbecue is on Saturday.

A Ponsonby primary school PTA meeting booked for 45 minutes ran to two hours on Tuesday night after members deadlocked on whether fried onions should sit on top of, or underneath, the sausage at Saturday's fundraiser.

The Under camp, led by deputy chair Annabel Marsh-Cottrell, said onions belong beneath the snag to stop the slide-off. The Over camp, fronted by treasurer Hugo Pemberton, said anyone who couldn't manage a sausage in bread without it falling apart had bigger problems than onions.

"I've run this sizzle for four years," Marsh-Cottrell told The Daily Yarn in the carpark. "Onions underneath. Always. It's a heat thing. Hugo's never held the tongs."

Pemberton, reached by phone, said Annabel was being precious and that the Mt Eden school had gone onions-on-top for years without anyone dying. A third parent, Fenella, suggested onions in a ramekin on the side and was removed from the WhatsApp group within four minutes.

The principal, asked to break the tie, said she was staying out of it and reminded parents the bread is Vogel's again this year, which has started a separate argument.

A second meeting has been booked for Friday night. The barbecue starts at 10am Saturday. The onions are already diced.
