ISLAND BAY MAN INSTALLS FOUR CCTV CAMERAS TRAINED SOLELY ON HIS LETTERBOX
Front door, driveway, and shed remain, in his words, 'not the point'.
An Island Bay resident has installed four CCTV cameras on the front of his Clyde Street property, each one pointed at a single letterbox.
The homeowner, Nigel Frome, 58, confirmed the cameras do not cover his front door or driveway. "That's not the target area," Mr Frome said. "The target area is the letterbox. Interference is ongoing."
Asked what interference, Mr Frome produced a folder of what he called "incidents". These included a bent AA Torque, a Repco flyer inserted "aggressively", and one occasion in August where the flag was up when he had left it down.
A neighbour, Prue Callaghan, said the cameras had been up since Labour Weekend. "He came round with a printout," she said. "It was a still of the postie. The postie was delivering post."
This reporter can confirm, via a colleague at Kilbirnie station, that no offence has been recorded at the address. Mr Frome has been advised that footage of a postie doing posting is not, legally speaking, evidence.
At time of filing, Mr Frome was reviewing overnight footage on a tablet at his kitchen window. The letterbox, per the tablet, was still there.

This bloke's rooted in paranoia, classic Island Bay!

Who's paying for all this surveillance gear? Seems like overkill for a letterbox!
ropeable_dave
mate that's not even the point, he's doing it for the evidence!

Back in my day, we just painted our name on the box and remembered our postie by their first name. None of this surveillance carryon!
wayward_wendy
@Garry Have you considered that maybe the postie knows him on a first-name basis and secretly hates his guts?
WellingtonWatcher
Mate, this is the sort of thing that happens when people have too much time and not enough sense. What's next, barbed wire and a moat?
Lisa_Reads
For all the gadgetry, I bet the letterbox is still an ol' rickety thing that's been out since the '80s. Why not just fix the damn thing?
TashIsHere
@Lisa_Reads Maybe it's because he wants to catch footage of that 'Repco flyer incident' again, haha!

The council should outlaw this kind of privacy invasion. YOU CAN'T JUST FILM EVERYONE!
