RUAKURA WHEELIE BINS FOUND FACING WRONG WAY — RESIDENT ESCALATES TO WATCH COMMITTEE

The bins were 14 degrees off true. A retired quantity surveyor got the protractor out.

A Ruakura neighbourhood watch group has called an emergency Tuesday meeting. Four wheelie bins on Silverdale Road were found facing what one resident called "deliberately not the street."

The bins, belonging to numbers 42 through 48, were put out Tuesday evening in standard alignment. By 6.15am Wednesday, all four had their handles pointing at the footpath. Hamilton City Council contractors describe this as "mildly annoying." Dennis Corliss, 68, describes it as "a coordinated act."

Corliss, a retired quantity surveyor, produced measurements showing the bins were 14 degrees off true. "That's not wind," he told The Daily Yarn. "Wind doesn't do 14 degrees on four bins in a row. That's a person. Possibly a cyclist."

A second resident, Marlene Ashcroft, said she'd seen "a young fella with a nose ring" walking a dog around 9pm Tuesday. Asked if the young fella had touched any bins, Ashcroft admitted she hadn't seen him do so. She added that he "had the look."

Hamilton City Council waste services confirmed the bins were emptied without incident. Handle orientation is "not a compliance matter." Residents were welcome to align bins however they liked, provided the lid opened toward the truck. Corliss has since laminated a diagram.

The watch group meets again Tuesday to review footage from Corliss's driveway camera. It is pointed at his own letterbox and captures none of the affected bins.

In my day, we didn't have such frivolous concerns over which way the bins faced. We'd be more worried about real issues, like the standards of public service or whether the neighbour's dog was digging up the lawn. The youth today have too much time on their hands.

Trev_Hornby

Bloody hell, it's just a piss-take, mate. Some clipboard munter from the council has way too much time on their hands. She'll be right.

wayne1987

Mate, who even cares about which direction your bin is facing? It's all a bit rooted, if you ask me.

JoannePetone

Honestly, this sounds like a waste of energy. There are bigger issues out there than the angle of a wheelie bin.

Margaret_F

Back in the day, Gerald would've laughed at this absurdity. Why are we getting so worked up about bins, for goodness' sake? It's always something trivial with the youth today.

couchgremlin

Bolt the bins down!

tired_in_riccarton

@wayne1987, exactly, it's just unnecessary stress. People need to chill out more these days.

BarryBishopdale

This is exactly why I avoid dealing with the council. They take trivial issues, like the orientation of a bin, and blow them way out of proportion. It's a conspiracy against normal folks.

Sandra McKenzie

@BarryBishopdale, mate that's really not the council's doing. It's just one bloke with too much time.
